Attention, the swedish are coming !
More and more it seems that scandinavian bands would be the Mekka of rock music. Lots of good quality bands appear from this lands and Nubian Rose, the band around frontgirl Sofia Lilja Akerlund, is one of them. With their debut album “Mountain” they show us a great start. With this they are on the rise all across the swedish borders too. The album was produced by swedish star producer Tobias Lindell (Europe, Heat, Hardcore Superstar) and this tells us about the bands quality as well.
Sofia Lilja Akerlund – vocals
Thomas Lindgren – lead guitars
Christer Akerlund – lead guitars
Henric Uhrbom – bass
Fredrik Akerlund – keyboards
David Algesten – drums
If you don’t feel confident with the first song, you only will listen with half of your ears…but it isn’t. The opener directly hit your ears and stays there. “Ever see your Face” is a dynamic and catchy song. Also the following title track “Mountain” is massive rockin’ and reminds to Heart in the first moments. This is caused by Sofia’s vocals and also the great guitar solos have to be told.
Especially in “How am I” the voice comes to it’s own. This voice not only can storm forward, it also fits perfect in silent sounds. I like this ballad a lot.
“Reckless” is catchy too and maybe will find it’s way to the radio station’s playlists….a haunting melody.
All songs are written by the band with one exception: “Close my eyes forever”…originally by Lita Ford / Ozzy Osbourne. Sofia performs with Mats Leven here and they created an amazing cover version of this old classic.
“Mountain” is a great debut album for Nubian Rose. Those who like music of the 80′s cannot do anything wrong. It partly reminds to Heart and is also influenced by Dio, Whitesnake and other legends of that times. People who read my reviews know, that I sometimes got problems with female vocals in rock music cause most of them are not qualified enough for that job and power and knowledge is missing. But this voice assured me. Sofia can perform powerful and also sing wonderful ballad themes. On stage I think her vocals will appear even better…and that the lady looks pretty is definetely not a fault.
The only thing I was missing a bit was the variety in their music, but apart from that it is a great debut. Looking forward to the follow up.
